The Daily Learner Evaluation is typically accessed via an invitation sent directly to the Preceptor who has worked with the Learner. The intent is to collect feedback regarding the shift immediately following. The items being evaluated are the same each time. Each item represents a component of the learner's ability to practice with good clinical judgment.
To complete the evaluation, simply answer each item. Utilize the rubric to guide the answers. Click submit when the evaluation is complete.
Several factors may impact the scores including the preceptor's adherence to the rubric, the care that was provided during the shift, and the conditions of the department. For example, a learner may have encountered something that is brand new and that experience may have required more intervention from the preceptor than a familiar encounter. Scores for that shift may be lower. This does not represent a learner who did a bad job but a learner who is not ready for autonomous practice.
Measuring clinical judgment shift over shift it will more often allow the educator to use a strategy that helps the learner maximize their strengths to take advantage of new learning opportunities. Feedback delivered this way is easier for the learner to accept and be motivated to take action. This method also helps the educator to identify the learner's weaknesses or gaps that may represent a threat to patient safety. A best practice is to collaborate with the learner and preceptors to determine a strategy to prevent errors, protect patients, and overcome the practice gaps.
